How Long Do Freeform Dreads Take To Lock

While the overall process can take between 18-24 months some loc wearers find the beginning and end phases to be the easiest because the middle stages present their own set of challenges. Waiting for dreads to lock is a long process that takes a lot of patience.

So I discovered how to freeform my dreadlocks.

How long do freeform dreads take to lock. However I recommend allowing them to lock on their own with patience. Most dreads will lock in about three to six months but it really depends on the softness of the hair. The length of time it takes for your dreads to lock varies mostly depending on the type of hair and locking method used.

Hair that is really soft andor thin will take much longer to dread than hair that is thick and course. You will also notice that they dont change in shape or appearance anymore. Heres how to start freeform dreadlocks in 2020.

If youre hoping to have more defined locs sooner styled or semi-freeform locs may be better for you. Conversely there are others who say they find the beginning stages to be the hardest. Free-form dreads can take anyway from 12-15 months to lock up.

Kinky hair types lock up the easiest whereas straighter hair types take more effort and care. For some people it might take as little as 3 months others a year and for some it could take as long as 2 years to have all strands of hair locked. Methods like backcombing twisting and palm rolling will help to lock and set your dreads.

Some people literally do exactly what I mentioned. On the flipside it could take a full two years before your freeform locs fully take shape. Mature dreadlocks are tightly knotted and you cant pull them apart with your fingers.

Dreadlocks are a popular and unique hairstyle. The amount of work that this will require will vary a lot from person to person. On average your hair should begin to loc within a couple of weeks.

You may already have dreads but struggle with getting your dreads to lock quickly and effectively. You should also keep your dreads clean and well-maintained as this will help them lock quickly and stay. For twist and rip backcomb palm rolling and free form methods you should expect 12-18 months to lock up and reach maturity.

If the hair is very soft or was previously relaxed it can take approximately a year or so to lock. Believe it or knot with a cooperative hair type and a perfectly consistent maintenance routine your dreads can be locked or very nearly locked in 8 weeks. Some techniques will help your hair lock faster.

3 Months - They are smoothing out and feel tighter everyday. Although some sites say this can take as little as a few weeks it more commonly takes closer to 2 3 years for all your hair to lock up using this method. Alternatively it seems to be ok in some cases as long as the dreadlocks have ALWAYS been interlocked.

It usually takes about six months for dreadlocks to mature but with the proper care you could have well-formed dreadlocks in as little as three to four months using the backcombing method. Free form locks are exactly as the name suggest. After the initial stage baby dreadlocks will form as thicker matted strands often still surrounded by loose hair.

Dreads that are under a year old are considered young. This length of time could help you determine what type of locs you want. Even Mom thinks they look better.

There is a lot of variation within the realm of natural dreadlocks. If youre wondering about how to start dreads with palm-rolling it is used a lot in maintaining locs but seldom do people actually start their locks by doing it. However if you have kinky hair then your hair can lock up faster than people with straighter hair type.

All that you need to do for this method issit back relax and do absolutely nothing. If you lock your hair using the freeform method rather than the backcomb method your hair will take longer to dread because you are not forcefully locking your hair but allowing it to naturally form which takes time. When you secure the ends use a petroleum-free dread wax which will smooth down loose hairs and help your hair form dreadlocks much more quickly.

The new growth will always grow out un-knotted and its up to you to help it find its way into a dreadlock and knot it up with the already dreaded hair. From what I can tell most problems with interlocking happen when a dreadlock that is already established is interlocked and then not maintained for an extended period of time and left to lock up naturally again or with a different method. No matter how you start your dreads you cant knot the hair that hasnt grown out yet.

I knew this was something I didnt want as I wanted my locs to look unique to me. Short hair around 4 to 6 inches 10 to 15 cm can take as little as a year to lock up while hair longer than shoulder length can take 2 years or more. At the beginning of my freeform dreadlock journey I watched many videos of people making dreadlocks and they all seem to have the same look.

This stage lasts 3 to 6 months but can take longer for soft fine or wavy hair.
